THE YELLOW HAT Behind him a wall of sacred pechas, the Kangyur scriptures wrapped in red cloth. In front a lifetime of remembering. This is a Gelugpa monk from Zanskar. The yellow, crescent shaped hat called a ringa marks him as a follower of Je Tsongkhapa, the Yellow Hat sect of Tibetan Buddhism. In the isolated monasteries of Zanskar, where winter cuts the valley off for six months, this hat is not costume. It’s lineage. Look at his face. Every wrinkle is a mantra repeated a million times.
