The Saidapet Cactus Farm and the British Red Dye! @chennaipincodes The two-acre government nopalry was established in the late 18th century in Marmalong (part of modern-day Saidapet), on the banks of the Adyar River. The farm's goal was to break the Spanish monopoly on the highly coveted carmine red dye, which was extracted from cochineal insects. Dr. James Anderson, Physician General for the East India Company and a keen botanist, introduced prickly pear cactus (Opuntia) and cochineal insects to the area. The dye was produced by drying and crushing pregnant female cochineal insects. The British Army famously used this brilliant red dye for their "redcoat" uniforms.
