Yesterday’s CJP protest raised more questions than it answered. If CJP claims to represent independent civil society, why were senior AAP leaders and other opposition figures involved? Who organised the protest, who funded it, and what political coordination took place behind the scenes? CJP increasingly faces allegations of functioning as the opposition’s B-team. Transparency is the only credible way to answer those allegations. Meanwhile, AAP must address the controversy surrounding the cancellation of municipal elections in 28 wards of Patiala and 22 wards of Moga, including allegations of irregularities in the nomination process. Congress, too, must answer serious questions surrounding allegations linked to MP Bimol Akoijam and JNU. Such claims demand scrutiny based on verified findings, not political convenience CJP demands accountability from those in power. Fair enough. But will it apply the same standards to AAP, Congress and the rest of the opposition? Civil society cannot demand transparency from everyone else while refusing to answer questions about its own political associations. Accountability cannot be selective. CJP is trying to cancel SIR. Don’t let them. Indian law is clear that a non-citizen of India cannot be registered as a voter, and CJP has publicly demanded CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation, a freeze/rollback of SIR, and a halt to upcoming polls. Let me ask a very simple question. If someone is not an Indian citizen, why should their name be on India’s electoral roll in the first place? This should not be about religion. It should be about citizenship and electoral integrity. I have personally worked with persecuted Hindu communities in Bangladesh and helped rebuild a vandalised temple there. I have seen how dangerous the situation can become for Hindus. Illegal Muslim immigration from Bangladesh into India is therefore not an issue that should be casually brushed aside. The basic principle behind voter verification should be straightforward: do not remove a single eligible Indian voter, but do not allow an ineligible non-citizen to remain on the electoral roll either. CJP is demanding that SIR be rolled back and that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar resign. My question is straightforward. If there are procedural flaws in SIR, produce the evidence. Challenge those flaws. Demand transparency, corrections and due process. But why should verification itself be abandoned?

No moral urgency. The Hindu community in Bengal is watching all of this carefully. And many fear that if they do not speak today, tomorrow they may not even have the space left to speak at all.
