I MAY get into a lot of trouble for saying this, but here goes nothing 🫡 To the powers that make the rules and laws in this land: The purpose of religion is to bring people together, to take them closer to the Almighty, to build a relationship with one's own inner self, to ask for forgiveness for the sins we knowingly and unknowingly commit, to find solace, peace and communal harmony, to bring people onto the path of salvation. If you make ultra strict standards and diktats for people with regards to whom, where and how they can worship or follow their chosen religion, you are not fulfilling any of these purposes, rather, you are taking people away from the path of righteousness. Soon, it will become 'too much trouble' or 'too dangerous' to follow a religion. Having rules is good. But at the end of the day, please remember that it is humans who are attempting to follow them. Mistakes are made by humans. If we were perfect, we would be the Almighty. I can sit down with whoever wishes to argue with me about the nonsense rules and laws made by the so-called upholders of every religion and explain how the Almighty in every form never meant for any rule to take us away from our religion and our roots. But that is an argument for another day. I can also enlist the many ways in which we, as Sindhis and proud Nanakpanthis (followers of Guru Nanak) are regularly discriminated against by Sikhs and Punjabis who believe that the Holy Granth and the word of the Gurus is their jagir and not ours, whereas we know and understand that our Gurus never meant for rules to be used for discrimination but rather to unite devotees. Our faith is stronger than you think. It gives us more understanding than you will ever have by just uttering 'Satnaam Waheguru' and not realising the power of those two words. That again, is an argument for another day. My only plea is - let faith unite; not discriminate. Grief is funny. You could be laughing your guts out one minute & dissolve into tears the very next. It is a dichotomy of the worst kind - where you try to hold on to the memories of the ones you have lost, while trying to live life fully & keeping up with all your roles & responsibilities. It's been 14 long months since my beautiful mumma left for her heavenly abode & I'm still coming to terms with the incredible loss. 2024 also saw our family losing my cousin Prem bhaiya to a sudden heart attack. Last month, my cousin Veena didi passed away, after struggling with a long illness. I attended her last rites in Indore - painful, gut wrenching but necessary. Veena didi, you will be missed, by all of us. Yesterday, I attended the funeral of the husband of one my first friends in the world of blogging - a loss so painful & sudden that we were all left shocked to the core. I grew up in Dubai in a nuclear set-up & I met my cousins once every two years for a brief period, when we used to come to India for summer holidays. They were a part of my family, but not a part of my life as I knew it so I wasn't (still am not) very close to any of them. Yet, the loss of my cousins led to many days of contemplation, crying bouts & melancholy that still lingers. And that's why I say grief is also weird - because how do you explain your devastation at the demise of someone whom you were related to but not very close to, or someone whom you knew of just offhand? I think this is because it drives home the fact that none of us is immortal. All of us have so much potential, so much love and joy to give to the world, that it seems almost cruel to think that it could go for a toss by the cruel hand of fate. Also, grief for someone whose life touched us indirectly is a unique kind of sorrow - deeply tied to the legacy, love, and presence the person left behind, even if its not the traditional form of mourning. Grief affects all of us - we shouldn't fight it, rather deal with it with empathy & common sense, for ourselves & for those in the immediate circle of the family. Mumma 💔 A year without you. 365 days. Countless moments. Memories that could have been made, but weren't - because you aren't here anymore, at least physically 🥹 I've tried to rise from the grief all through this year, using words to heal me. But today, even words fail me. How do I get over this loss, when I literally saw your last breath leave your body as I held you in my arms? I miss you, my beautiful mumma. Every single day. It may look like I am carrying on with my life as if your demise hasn't irrevocably shaken me in ways I can't list, but I would do anything to see you smile one more time, to go to the gurudwara with you, too hear you teach Agastya & Advait a new bhajan, or answer the phone to hear 'Satnam Waheguru' as your greeting. Since you left me, I find myself bringing back my inner child, returning to my earliest memories of you over & over again. Some memories rush to my mind unexpectedly, while others I consciously tap into for comfort. The way you used to feed me so I could read, how you used to braid my hair just right, you driving me to the gurudwara before each of my Board Exams & then getting me back in time to catch the school bus, etc. I cherish the way this wonderful thing called 'long term memory' is allowing me to revisit my time with you over & over again. Grief comes in waves, they say & its so true - it hits me at the oddest times, when I least expect it. A poem I read, a picture I see, a phrase used by someone in a random conversation, a meditation session, when I'm stuck in traffic. While I these waves don't come at all, I have learnt to ride them, because they allow me to feel closer to you in some way. The one question that haunts me till date - did you know you were going to leave us? What were you thinking about on your last day? Did you think I was a good daughter & a good mother? Your opinion matters more than anyone else's mumma but you are not here to share it with me. Will I ever recover from your loss? Maybe, with your teachings to guide me. Your loss has left a hole that will get smaller with time, but never fully close. Truth be told, I never want it to. Hope you are resting in peace, my shining star ⭐
