A few days of snowfall brought life to a standstill, reminding us of the old days when pausing now and then, and reflecting on the good and the bad, came naturally. Snow brings joy to the town. To children and adults. To farmers, businesses, and especially tourism. For over 25 years, this valley has relied heavily on it. That reliance makes it hard to look at the downsides. Every year, the same patterns repeat. Congestion. Disruption. Strain on the town. Much of this could have been avoided. Yet little changes. I can only hope this small town finds its way back to its original charm, and begins to heal from the pressure and neglect we have placed on her.

Meet Shiv Kumar, Forest Department official and a dedicated wildlife conservationist from Udaipur, Lahaul—a true guardian of the snow leopard. While government service often limits personal pursuits, Shiv Kumar chose a different path. Driven by passion, he has worked relentlessly to document endangered Himalayan wildlife, particularly snow leopards and high-altitude bird species. A National Biodiversity Award 2021 recipient, his efforts go far beyond documentation. Through sustained community engagement, he has created awareness among local residents and migratory shepherds, fostering coexistence with wildlife. Along with fellow photographers, he has recorded over 200 bird species and snow leopards, strengthening conservation knowledge while promoting responsible wildlife tourism and community-based ecotourism, inspired by the Spiti model. HOPE | Hopester #05 Under the Himalayan Ocarina Project for Entrepreneurs (HOPE), Himachal Tourism highlights individuals who explored new possibilities for tourism beyond the conventional season. Meet Puneet Sharma — an entrepreneur who played a key role in demonstrating the potential of winter tourism through the Spiti Snow Drive. At a time when winters in high-altitude regions were largely seen as a limitation, Puneet conceptualised and curated the Spiti Snow Drive, showcasing Spiti Valley as a viable and experiential winter destination. The initiative helped shift the narrative around Himalayan winters—from inactivity to adventure, resilience and opportunity. Alongside this, he also made a small community-oriented contribution by facilitating access to ice skates for local children, encouraging engagement with winter conditions in a positive way. Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, or National Unity Day, is celebrated every year on 31st October to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, known as the “Iron Man of India.” He played a pivotal role in uniting over 560 princely states to form modern India, symbolizing the country’s unity, integrity, and national solidarity. In 2025, the celebration has been extended from 1st to 15th November at Ekta Nagar, Gujarat, through a grand cultural festival called Bharat Parv, showcasing India’s cultural diversity and spirit of unity “Vividhta Mein Ekta” (Unity in Diversity). Himachal Pradesh Tourism is participating actively in this festival by setting up an exhibition stall at Ekta Nagar to promote the state’s diverse tourism offerings. The stall showcases Himachal’s scenic beauty, rich culture, and adventure tourism opportunities to a national audience. This initiative aims to publicize Himachal Pradesh as a major tourist destination and to foster greater awareness of its unique attractions during this prestigious national event. Additionally, the Gujarat Chief Minister visited the Himachal Pradesh Tourism stall, marking the importance of the department’s efforts in presenting the state’s tourism potential as part of the Rashtriya Ekta Diwas celebrations. This visit symbolizes the collaborative spirit of promoting tourism and cultural exchange between states at the event. This celebration and exhibition not only honor the legacy of national unity but also actively promote tourism development in Himachal Pradesh, reaching a wide audience through the cultural and tourism showcase at Ekta Nagar.
